Juniper encroachment across central and eastern Oregon has increased significantly over the last century and adversely impacted rangeland health. Restoration treatments usually involve cutting juniper, milling suitable saw logs and then burning remaining slash piles or leaving them to decay.
The Burn Boss is an air curtain incinerator that burns vegetative material using technology that reduces smoke emissions and converts a percentage of that material to biochar, which can be used as a soil amendment. Below is one photo of the Burn Boss at work in timber, another in town. Ryan Ramage of Valley Environmental (see www.valleyenvironmental.net for details) will run the Burn Boss Juniper-to-Biochar demo, which will run from 11am to 4pm. This Juniper-to-Biochar demo is sponsored by Sustainable NW Wood.
